About me

Square

I’m an English wine and food writer, currently based in Amsterdam. I write mostly, but not exclusively about organic, biodynamic and natural wines, and I have an obsession with orange wines. This resulted in the publication of my first book, Amber Revolution, in 2018. It’s received excellent critical reaction, including the New York Times’ best wine book of 2018 and a Roederer International Wine Writing Award. Find out more about it here.

Originally trained as a musician, I worked variously as a sound engineer, IT consultant and alternative currency designer before wine took over my life. My writing career began in 2011 with the founding of The Morning Claret – an online wine magazine which has become one of the world’s best loved resources for natural, artisanal, organic and biodynamic wine.

I contribute regularly to publications such as Decanter magazineMeininger’s Wine Business International and World of Fine Wine. I’m also active as a judge (for Decanter World Wine Awards and others) and I speak regularly at conferences and other wine-related events.

When not obsessing about wine, I’m a keen cook and lover of difficult music.
